Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers can help you get a smile worthy of a starring role on the big screen. Veneers are thin porcelain sheets that measure about 1 millimeter (four 100ths of an inch) in thickness. They’re applied to your existing teeth to mask flaws and discoloration.

Veneers match the natural color and contours of your teeth so that they look completely natural. Yet they cover badly shaped, damaged, or discolored teeth.

Depending on your cosmetic goals, Dr. Hoang will recommend a single veneer, several veneers, or an entire set.

Why would I need dental veneers?

Veneers cover minor cosmetic imperfections caused by genetics, aging, injury, or the food and drink you consume. They’re an excellent choice for patients with minimal tooth decay and damage to their natural teeth.

Dr. Hoang recommends veneers to address several dental problems, including:

  • Dentin discoloration, especially those caused by injury
  • Chips
  • Wide gaps
  • Broken teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
  • Short teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Heavy enamel staining

Veneers help you achieve the smile you’re proud to flash.

How do I care for dental veneers?

A good oral care routine can help your veneers last 10-15 years, sometimes longer. This means twice-daily brushing and flossing. Also, avoid chewing on hard objects like popcorn seeds, ice cubes, and pencils.

If your veneers do wear down, Dr. Hoang can replace them.

What is it like to get veneers?

The application of veneers does require more than one visit to Dr. Hoang’s office. At your first visit, Dr. Hoang removes a minor amount of tooth enamel from the surface of your tooth to leave room for the veneer.

He then creates a mold of your teeth and sends it to a dental lab where a lab tech custom-makes your veneers. Dr. Hoang places temporary veneers in the meantime.

Once your veneers return from the lab, Dr. Hoang removes your temporary veneers and etches your teeth so that the porcelain sheets fit snugly. He bonds the veneers to your teeth using dental cement.
